The British High Commission in Malta

The British High Commission is the diplomatic representation of the British Government in Malta. The High Commission carries out the same tasks as an Embassy, but is called a High Commission since both Malta and the United Kingdom are members of the Commonwealth.

The main tasks of the British High Commission are to present British policies to the Maltese Government and people, to report and explain Maltese policies and views to the British Government, and to promote British interests in Malta.

Political Section

Carole Johnson, Deputy High Commissioner, heads the Political Section. She coordinates the functions of all the sections in the High Commission and is responsible for fostering bilateral relations with Malta, promoting the United Kingdom’s political and economic interests in line with Foreign and Commonwealth Office objectives. For more information, visit the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.

The Political Section’s work involves regular contact with Maltese Ministers, Members of Parliament (Government and Opposition), civil servants, academics, the business community, the Police, the Armed Forces, the constituted bodies and other important individuals and organisations. The Political Section organises visits to and from the UK, lobbies the Maltese authorities to secure support for UK positions in international fora (eg. the United Nations) and explains the policies of the UK Government. The Section cooperates with the Maltese authorities in connection with Malta’s accession to the European Union. For information on Twinning and EU/Action Plan projects, go to our section  UK & Malta. The Section coordinates Royal Navy Ship visits, and works closely with the British Council to organise and publicise academic, cultural and sporting events to develop and strengthen bilateral links.

Press and Public Affairs Section
