Migration

The British Government is committed to helping Malta deal with the ongoing problem of illegal sea-borne migration from Africa. Malta's position in the Mediterranean makes it vulnerable to illegal migration, it is on one of the major routes from Africa into Europe. Since 2002, over 9000 migrants have landed on Maltese shores.

The High Commission works with the Maltese Government, NGOs and others to identify joint opportunities to help resolve this problem because Malta matters to the UK.

The High Commission has been working hard to help: providing advice on returning failed asylum seekers, sponsoring civil servants to attend courses on Managing Migration, sending interviewing officers to work in Malta, and also on integration.
